LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – A Calcasieu Parish sheriff’s deputy shot a man who tried to drive away in his unit with him inside after a traffic stop.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff-elect Stitch Guillory said the shooting happened on I-10 East in Lake Charles on Thursday, March 7, around 10 a.m.

According to Sheriff-elect Stitch, after the trooper pulled over the vehicle, he was given permission to search the vehicle and found illegal drugs inside.

The driver then jumped into the car and began to drive away with the deputy still in the vehicle, the sheriff said.

When the driver refused to stop, the deputy shot him, added Sheriff-elect Guillory.

The vehicle crashed into the woods. Both the deputy and the driver were taken to a hospital.

Guillory noted the driver was seriously injured by the gunshot, while the deputy had minor injuries.
